Cultural Learnings of HK for make benefit Glorious nation of Sing-a-pore!
Ahh...still suffering from a holiday hangover. To date, this is my 4th time going to HK. Previous times were in 1996, 2000, 2004 and now 2006-7. It was awesome spending the new year there with the HK cousins and joining them for a countdown dinner/party! Surely a great way to usher in the new year with a big bang! I'm so glad I went on this trip because it was great catching up with them after a few years and getting to know some of them better. Some study in the UK so we don't often meet up. Its great that they still treat us like part of the family even though we are not immediate cousins. (our grandfathers were brothers).
Also, I managed to rough it out on the streets of HK myself...trying to get by with whatever Cantonese I could use from my limited vocabulary. After a few days, I pulled it off pretty well! Asking for sizes and different designs wasn't a problem when shopping for clothes! On the last day, even managed to make small talk with the rather attractive Cathay Pacific Air Stewardess!
This pic was not really my idea, seriously. I was asked to join in the photo so I obliged out of courtesy! If only I were more fluent in Cantonese then I would at least say sth decent instead of just smiling sheepishly! =)
On the 3rd day, I met up with Gary Larson from IH in Melbourne. It was great to see him again after about a year and a half. Gary hails from He is currently teaching English in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and came down to HK for a day of holiday. That's his girlfriend Leslie-Ann, and my cousin Maggie.
